PURPOSE:To accelerate the response of tracking control and to stabilize operation by generating a first timing signal indicating a sampling position at the time of reproducing a pilot signal for tracking recorded in a first area. CONSTITUTION:The tracking control is performed by sampling a tracking error signal detected in the first area based on a positioning signal recorded in the first area 21, and a recording start/end timing at the time of rewriting or overwriting in a second area is decided based on the positioning signal 23 similarly. When the positioning signal is not detected from the first area 21, a sampling timing and a recording timing are decided by substituting the timing of the positioning signal detected once. Thus, the recording start timing of a track at an editing time is decided based on its own signal, and the positional relation of data on the track recorded once on a tape is held accurately.
