Oxetane monomers (I) having perfluorinated alkoxy side chains; a method for their preparation; a method for their polymerization; and the resultant hydroxy-terminated prepolymers (II) are disclosed. The monomers are prepared by the reaction of fluorinated alkoxides with aryl sulfonate derivatives of 3-hydroxymethyl oxetanes, e.g., the p-toluene sulfonate derivative of 3-hydroxymethyl-3-methyl oxetane or of 3,3-bis(hydroxymethyl)oxetane. A high yield of the oxetanes having pendant perfluorinated alkoxy side chains is obtained. The fluorinated alkoxy oxetane monomers of this invention can be readily polymerized in the presence of Lewis acid catalysts and polyhydroxy aliphatic compounds to obtain high yields of hydroxy-terminated prepolymers having molecular weights from 1,000 to about 30,000, and a polymer backbone resulting from the opening of the oxetane ring. wherein: n is 1 to 5; m is 1 or 2; R is hydrogen or alkyl having from 1 to 4 carbons; R* three eighths * is alkylene or isoalkylene having 2 to about 5 carbons; R f is linear or branched chain perfluoroalkyl,-isoalkyl,-haloalkyl or -haloisoalkyl having from 1 to 20 carbons, or oxaperfluorinated polyether, having from 4 to about 60 carbons; and x is 2 to about 250.
