The invention relates to a chain-based refunding mechanism for a shopping trolley of the type comprising a key connected to a trolley and able to cooperate with a lock fixed to another trolley, making them bound one to the other, and allowing them to be freed only by the insertion of a coin (refundable) which opens the lock but which then remains captured when the key is removed. The refunding mechanism according to the invention is characterised in that the insertion or withdrawal of the key (4) forces the rotation of a cam (2), likewise the insertion or withdrawal of the coin (3) forces the rotation of another cam (1). These cams moreover each possess, on their circumference, a notch (11 and 12). An interactive latch (5 or 8) possesses two appendages which penetrate alternately into the said notches, passing from one to the other when the key and coin are in place, but blocking one or the other cam in position when the coin or the key is removed thereby immobilising the key or the coin remaining in place. <IMAGE>
