Novel compounds of the formula <FORM:1107735/C2/1> wherein A is the radical -CH=CH- or -CH2CH2- and R is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, aryl, bromoaryl, aralkyl or carboxylic acyl radical, the R groups being the same or different, are obtained by hydrogenating a compound of the formula <FORM:1107735/C2/2> under conditions sufficient to reduce the ketone group by replacing the oxygen atom by two hydrogen atoms and, if desired, to hydrogenate the olefinic bond, the phenolic groups optionally being etherified or acylated before or after hydrogenation. Therapeutic compositions having estrogenic properties and useful for promoting growth in meat-producing animals, contain the above compounds as active ingredient. The composition may be in a form suitable for oral or parenteral application, e.g. as a constituent of an animal foodstuff (see Division A5).
