Sparingly water-soluble refrigerants (I) for prodn. of ice by evaporative cooling in direct contact with water comprise: (a) a perfluoropentane (Ia), esp. perfluoro-n-pentane, perfluoroisopentane or perfluorocyclopentane; (b) a hydrofluoropentane (Ib) of formula C5FnH12-n, where n = 1-11; (c) a mixt. of (Ia) and (Ib); or (d) pentane contg. sufficient (Ia) and/or (Ib) to make the refrigerant practically incombustible. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) may be used in storage cooling systems, in which ice produced using off-peak electricity (e.g. overnight) is used for cooling buildings, etc. (I) are practically incombustible, do not damage the ozone layer, do not form corrosive acids by hydrolysis, do not form clathratis, are not degraded by microorganisms, and are nontoxic. |
