PURPOSE:To provide the high-grade liquid crystal display which is improved in visual angle characteristic and has excellent visibility. CONSTITUTION:Between two sheets of polarizing plates 1 and 4, are disposed a liquid crystal cell 3 for driving which is twist-oriented when no voltage is impressed between two sheets of the substrates and an optically anisotropic element 2 whose optical axis is continuously twist oriented. The optical axis of optically anisotropic element 2 is shifted to the absorption axis or transmission axis of the polarizing plate on the side where the light escapes finally by the angle phi determined by the following equation. phi=DELTAn<2>XpXdX180 deg./(4lambda<2>); where DELTAn: the optical anisotropy of the optically anisotropic element, p: the twist pitch length of the optical axis of the optically anisotropic element, d: the thickness of the optically anisotropic element, lambda: the wavelength of a visible wavelength range. |
