A process for reducing amount of heavy metals in waste water from the group of zinc, cadmium, nickel, copper, cobalt, silver, chromium and mercury, during which waste water is first submitted to extraction by an organic extraction reagent such as a solution of triisooctylamine or bis(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid giving rise to organocomplexes of heavy metals. Then the achieved organic phase undergoes re-extraction by mineral acids, such as nitric, sulphuric or hydrochloric acid and the inorganic phase containing heavy metal mineral salts is separated off.
