A drive belt for belt driven magnetic tape cartridges, which belt is characterized by a tangent modulus of elasticity in the range of 30 - 100 MPa, measured while the belt is at 1.5 - 6 Newtons tension. Belt is polyurethane produced by extrusion. Belt is annealed while it is stretched in the range of 200 - 500 % elongation. Benefits of the improved belt include less dependence of tape tension on the amount of tape wound or unwound on the cartridge reels. <IMAGE>
