A wear-and abrasion-resistant alloy has a composition within the broad range:- .C.2 - 5 % .Cr.5 - 30% .Mo.1 - 10% .V.0.5 - 12% .Ni up to.1% .Mn up to.1% .Si up to.1% .Fe and incidental elements,. the remainder. The Cr, Mo, V and C are balanced so that a 2 ins. diameter rod of the alloy achieves a martensitic structure on air-cooling from an austentic condition. For instance, they may be balanced to satisfy the following equations:-
