Monoazo dyes containing a heterocyclic residue and materials dyed therewith

The invention comprises monoazo dyestuffs of the formula wherein R is a phenyl or 2-benzthiazolyl group, R1 is a phenylene group R2 is H or C1-C4 alkyl R3 is C1-C4 alkylene, R4 is H or (CH3) and Z is a chain of carbon atoms or a 1,2-phenylene group which together with the group forms a 5 or 6 membered ring, the groups R, R1, R2, R3 and Z may be substituted with substituents which do not render the dyestuff water-soluble. They may be obtained by coupling a diazotized amine of formula R-NH2 with a compound of the formula (see Division C2 for preparation). Specified rings which Z may complete are a 2-pyrrolidinone ring to which may be fused a benzene ring or a piperidin-2-one ring. Examples are given for the production of dyes wherein R is an unsubstituted or substituted phenyl or 2-benzthiazolyl group. They may be used for dyeing textile materials including polymer fibres such as cellulose esters, polyacrylonitriles, polyesters or polyamides, yellow, orange, red or violet shades.ALSO:A compound of the formula is obtained by reacting N-b -aminoethyl-N-ethyl-m-toluidine and butyrolactone to give a compound of the formula which is then reacted with acrylonitrile in the presence of hydroquinone and cupric acetate monohydrate. The product is useful in the production of dyestuffs (see Division C4]. Also, a compound of the formula is obtained by reacting N-b -aminoethyl-N-ethyl-m-toluidine with phthalide in the presence of sulphanilic acid.
