摘要 An internal combustion engine 1 drives a plurality of generators 21, 22 at the same, variable, speed as one another, the generator 21, 22 having differing characteristics such that the minimum speeds at which they become effective to generate power are different to one another (Fig 2A). Generator 21 may start generating power at 1200 rpm and have maximum efficiency at about 2000 rpm, and generator 22 may start generating power at 2700 rpm and have maximum efficiency at above 3000 rpm, (Fig 2B). Generator 21, 22 charge a battery 5 via a rectifier 4. A controller 6 receiving power from rectifier 4 or battery 5 provides a.c. power at an adjustable frequency to an induction motor 7 which drives the automobile. Controller 6 also controls excitation of generators 21, 22 in response to the output voltage of rectifier 4. A control voltage for generator 21 may be lower than that for generator 22 so that the load current is predominantly supplied by generator 22 at a rated engine speed (eg. 3000 rpm). <IMAGE>
