The sliding bar etc. (26) is engaged by pre-loaded sliding (50) and holding (72) clamps. A drive mechanism (42) moves the sliding clamp in the travel direction (20) of the bar, engaging it with the bar in the process and releasing the holding clamp. At the start of the return stroke the sliding clamp is released and the holding one engages with the bar due to its pre-loading, preventing bar movement in the reverse direction. The clamps can hinge on axes (64,88) between the engaged and free positions. USE/ADVANTAGE - Highly accurate indexing in micrometer range.
