The connector plug is formed by removing the outer sheathing (3) from an optical fibre at one end before inserting it in a corresponding stepped bore of a cylindrical sleeve (4). The optical fibre is secured in the cylindrical sleeve by crimping, with the end of the optical fibre projecting beyond the sleeve stripped of its inner sheathing (2) before insertion of the sleeve in a cylindrical lens element (6), collimating the light from the optical fibre into a parallel beam. Pref. the lens element has a convex lens surface (7) in its end face, coaxial to the axis of the inserted optical fibre. ADVANTAGE - Precision fixing and centring of optical fibre. Allows in-field assembly.
