When stacking sheets (1), in particular cardboard sheets, which are fed in an imbricated manner, onto a raisable and lowerable depositing platform, it is known, during a stack change, to carry on stacking sheets in the meantime on a vertically stationary bar grid (7) which can be horizontally introduced in the movement direction of the sheets in the stack region. In order to be able to introduce the bar grid (7) into the stack region without disruption, it is necessary to interrupt the sheet feeds intermittently. In order to carry out the stack change without incurring losses, while sheets (1) are fed continuously, the stack (2) is first of all lowered until its upper edge is located at a small distance beneath the bar grid (7). The bar grid (7) is then moved into the stack region, while to the partial stack forming thereon is made to oscillate horizontally in, and counter to, the movement direction of the sheets. For this purpose, use is made of a vibrating device (13) acting on a stop board (6).
