<p>A punch press, which can be controlled by a control device to a setpoint characteristic (40) for the depth of penetration as a function of the number of strokes, is provided with a control input by means of which a correction value (W) can be entered. The press then operates at a new operating point (41). When the number of strokes changes, the control device forms a new operating characteristic (44) with the value (W) and the previous setpoint characteristic (40).
