Hair is dyed by applying (a) an amine of the formula: <FORM:1025916/D1-D2/1> wherein R1 is H1 methyl, ethyl or propyl and X is -NR.R1 in which R is methyl, ethyl or propyl and R1 is -CH2CONH2, -CH2COOH, -CH2CH2 NHSO2CH3 or -CH2CON(C2H5)2 or an N-piperidyl or N-morpholyl radical, (b) one or more compounds of one of the following formulae: <FORM:1025916/D1-D2/2> wherein R2 is H and R3 is methoxy in the 4-position or R2 is H or methyl in the 6-position and R3 is -CH3, -NHCOCH3, -NHCH2CONH2, -NHCH2CON(C2H5)2 or -NHCOCH2N(C2H5)2 in the 3-position; R4-CO-CH2-CO-R5 wherein R4 is methyl and R5 is methyl or ethoxy or R4 is phenyl and R5 is p-carboxy-or m-carboxy-phenyl-amino; or <FORM:1025916/D1-D2/3> wherein Y is phenyl, p-sulphophenyl, m-sulphophenyl or 2-chloro-5-sulphophenyl and (c) an oxidizing agent; allowing sufficient time to elapse and then removing any excess of components (a), (b) and (c) from the hair. The compounds (a) and (b) may be used, where appropriate, in the form of their salts. The components may be applied in any sequence but preferably simultaneously. The solutions may also contain wetting, dispensing or penetrating agents as well as azo dyes, e.g. 4, 41-dihydroxy-2-aminoazobenzene. Examples are given in which the oxidizing agent (c) is hydrogen peroxide and a number of compounds (a) and (b) are specified. |
