Monitoring cutting edge wear in NC machine tool - using sensor to observe cutting operation and analysing signal spectrum in dependence on frequency changes and overall pattern

The monitoring of wear and fracture of the cutting edge of machine tool is performed by observing the cutting operation using a sensor which gives an electrical signal. This signal is then subject to spectral analysis. The frequency changes in the formation of cuttings are monitored as is the overall pattern of the signal, both of which are independent of the particular machine tool used. ADVANTAGE - Constant monitoring avoids tool wear and inaccurate machining.
