The monitoring method involves using a lambda probe (9) fitted within an gas exhaust section (7) of a vehicle IC engine (1). The output signal of the lambda probe is evaluated in a control unit (10). A fault signal is indicated, if during low-pressure phases of the engine performance graph a pulsation frequency amplitude threshold is exceeded. The pulsation frequencies are filtered out from the output signal of the lambda probe. ADVANTAGE - Leakages or sealing defects in exhaust gas system are detected.
