The display uses a freely-oscillating display element (124) acted on by a given setting force part of which is provided by on soft iron plate cooperating with an electromagnet (102), causing the oscillation of the display element to be amplified. The electromagnet is energised intermittently by an electrical circuit. Alternatively the display element incorporates a permanent magnet which is attracted by an electromagnetic coil which is supplied with a pulsed current for amplifying the oscillation of the freely-oscillating element.
