PURPOSE:To automatically read the codes of commodities by providing a reading means which reads the codes stuck onto the commodities and a moving means which changes the relative position relation of commodities and sets the commodity codes against the reading means. CONSTITUTION:A commodity 11 is automatically carried on a belt conveyor 2. The bar code of the commodity 11 is read by a code detector 3 and the external form of the commodity 11 is photographed by an image detector 4. If the detector 3 is unable to read the bar code, the commodity 11 is revolved by the prescribed frequency by an actuator 7 of a commodity moving device 6. Thus the bar code of the commodity 11 is read by the detector 3 for each revolution of the commodity 11.
