<p>To prevent deposition of metal and metal oxides from the atmosphere above the casting pool of molten metal (71) in the nip between the rolls (16) of a twin roll strip caster, suction is applied to the surface of the pool (71) through a pair of suction hoods (85) disposed one to each side of metal delivery nozzle (19). The suction hoods (85) are disposed within an enclosure (73) which encloses a space above the pool (71). Purge gas, for example argon, is introduced into the enclosed space through nozzles (87) in two streams which flow downwardly over the surfaces of the casting rolls toward the surface of the molten metal pool (71).</p> |
