The top sheet of a stack is gripped at its rear edge by a line of lifting suction grips (4), while air jets (11) are directed between the sheet and the stack to separate the sheet. The transport suction grips (5) have at least one line of grips (5.1) in the same line as the lifting grips, and interlaced with them. The spacing between the lifting and transport suction grips in the rear line is no greater than 5 mm. This prevents thin material from folding under the rear edge when the lifting grips are removed.
