A foot operated device for driving and extracting tent pegs (10) comprises a base plate (1) for resting on the ground, a lever (2) pivoted at one end to the base plate and having a coupling head (8) adjacent its opposite end for engaging a tent peg and supporting it with its tip in contact with the ground, and a foot pedal (25) for actuating the device. The coupling head (8) is rockably mounted on the lever (2) and is controlled by a linkage (20, 21) which pivots the head as the lever is depressed by the pedal (25) so as to maintain the peg travelling in a straight line as it is driven into the ground. The head (8) cooperates with a peg guide (32) disposed below the coupling head to ensure that the peg is driven in a straight line at the correct inclination to the ground. The foot pedal (25) is pivoted to the lever (2) intermediate the lever pivot (4) and the coupling head (8) and is swingable between two positions of engagement with the lever. In the first one of these positions, the pedal (25) projects towards the coupling head (8) so that actuation of the pedal depresses the lever (2) for driving the peg into the ground and, in the second position, the pedal (25) projects on the opposite side of the lever pivot from the coupling head, and engages the lever (2) via a pin (30) so that actuation of the pedal produces a lifting force on the coupling head (8) for extracting a peg from the ground.
|
