The body has two plates (8,9) fixed together forming an internal cavity (13) with two flexible sealingrings (15,16). A pressure plate (18) in the internal cavity may move axially and the periphery acts on the sealing rings so they protrude from the sides of the body and form a seal with the sides of the hole. The seal is held in position by a spring (25). The sealing rings are retracted by a tool applied to a connector (27) to depress the pressure plate. The plug (4) pref. has a cylindrical body (6) comprising two plates (8,9) fixed together with three screws (12) forming an internal cavity (13) and a housing (14) for two sealing rings (15,16). A pressure plate (18) with sloping sides (18a,18b) squeezes the sealing rings (15,16) outwards when raised by a spring (25). The spring is depressed by a tool pressing down on a spindle (21) allowing the sealing rings (15,16) to relax and retract. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used for sealing the threaded holes in a pressurised water reactor vessel flange during shut-down. Simpler, easier to fit and cheaper c.f. prior art designs.
