A casting type fishing reel (10) has a reel handle (16), a main gear train and an anti-reverse ratchet-pawl mechanism all mounted as a unitary assembly on a side cover (12a) for the reel (10) whereby the cover (12a) can be removed from the reel (10) for access to the gear train and other interior reel components without removing the handle (16).
