The invention relates to a clearance detector for a pneumatically operated disc brake having a brake caliper (2) surrounding a brake disc (1) on one side of which is arranged a brake application device (3) which, via at least one adjusting spindle (72, 73) and a pressure member (70, 71) fitted to its end nearest the brake disc, acts on a brake pad (10) fitted in the pressure side of the brake caliper (2) so as to move in relation to the brake disc (1). An adjuster (74) coupled integrally in rotation with the adjusting spindle (72, 73) keeps the clearance, which changes as the brake pad wears, substantially constant and is coupled to an angle of rotation sensor (54), the output signal (A) from which corresponds to the current degree of brake pad wear. In order to detect the current air clearance there is an evaluation device which detects the value of the output signal (A) from the angle of rotation sensor (54), calculates the signal difference (D1, D2, D3) from the previous signal value at any change in the output signal (A) and determines the current clearance from said signal difference (D1, D2, D3).
