In automatic arc welding apparatus in which a consumable electrode 46 is gravity fed along a seam, the electrode holder 16 is mounted on a slider 14 running between inclined rails 12 pivotally connected at their upper ends to a support 22 and at their lower ends to a base 18 having alternatively usable ground engaging surfaces 24, 26, 28, and the holder 16 is held in operative position by a detent 86 which at a predetermined position of the slider 16 is operated by a member 98 on one of the rails 12 to permit the force exerted by a loop 84 of the current supply cable 44 between the holder 16 and the slider 14 to pivot the holder 16 to interrupt the arc. |
