The sensor includes a magnetic support(10) with a U shape orientated towards the surface(S) of a mechanical component(P). The support presents a cylindrical segment(12) which supports an excitation coil(14). An ac current generator(16) is connected to the coil. The cylindrical segment of the support presents a bore(18) which receives a rod(20) with a measuring coil(22). This coil is connected to a synchronous detector(24) which measures the voltage at the coil terminals with reference to the excitation current. USE/ADVANTAGE - In aeronautics, motor car industry and robots for detecting defects inside mechanical components during manufacturing or maintenance inspections. Enables detection of surface discontinuities. Has increased coupling coefficient and improved spatial resolution.
