The automatic braking system responds when the distance between the vehicle and the vehicle in front is less than a safe value based upon the relative speeds and absolute speed. The vehicle has a radar system (10) for distance measurement, an acceleration sensor (8), speed sensor (6), steering angle sensor (7) and a sensor (9) that measures the friction coefficient of the road surface. The sensed values are fed to the vehicle controller (11) and when necessary braking is applied automatically by the hydraulic system (13) and the brakes (4, 5).
