The invention relates to a process for the preparation of silicon carbonitride from a polycarbosilane, which is characterised in that it comprises the following stages: (a) at least one polycarbosilane possessing at least two IDENTICAL SiH groups per molecule is brought into contact with sulphur in the vapour state, (b) the product resulting from (a) is treated thermally in an ammonia atmosphere (c) and finally, the product resulting from (b) is treated thermally in vacuo or in an inert atmosphere. …The process lends itself particularly well to the manufacture of ceramic fibres based on silicon carbonitride.
