1287700 Seals for bearings of universal joints BORG-WARNER CORP 6 Nov 1970 [15 Dec 1969] 52835/70 Headings F2B and F2U A seal 16 adapted to control purging of lubricant from a bearing of a universal joint comprises an annular body 27 of elastomeric material secured to a rigid backing ring 32 and provided with inner flexible sealing lips 28, 29 for wiping engagement with a trunnion 12 of the joint and an outer circumferential surface 33 for compressive static engagement with an inner cylindrical surface 23 of a bearing cup 14, a purging channel 41 extending through the backing ring and the annular body and being defined by a bottom wall 42 and elastic side walls 43 which resiliently support a purging lip 46 for limited axial movement in response to lubricant pressure on the bottom wall of the channel. Four such channels 41 are provided in each of the seals required for the joint, the side walls 43 resiliently supporting the purging lips 46 adjacent the channels such that, when lubricant pressure is exerted on the bottom walls 42, the side walls stretch allowing the lips to move axially to permit the escape of entrapped air and spent lubricant. The lubricant is supplied through a single fitting 18 and passes to the needle bearings 13 via passages 17 in the cross member 11 and slots 19 in the ends of the trunnions. A further sealing lip 37 is provided on each seal for preventing the entry of contaminants, the lip being urged into static sealing engagement with the end of the bearing cup by its own resilience and by centrifugal force. |
