PURPOSE:To provide a substrate type optical coupler excellent in high speed responsiveness in a system where a medium is mechanically switched. CONSTITUTION:1st and 2nd optical waveguides 2a and 2b are formed so as to mutually intersect with a quartz substrate, and a slit 4 is provided to cross the intersecting part 3 of the waveguides 2a and 2b. Liquid medium pots 5a and 5b are formed on the substrate 1 to communicate with the slit 4. Liquid media having different refractive indexes are sealed and held between the pots 5a and 5b and the slit 4 in a state where they do not mix with each other. The liquid medium is controlled to be forcibly fed by pistons 8a and 8b in the pots 5a and 5b to switch the liquid medium in the slit 3 of the crossing part 3, thereby switching an optical path. |
