Pulses detected by an earlobe sensor (8) are stored in a microcomputer (1), during any of a number of prescribed time intervals, and an average pulse rate is calculated from a cumulative result. Alternatively the amount of consumed energy maybe derived from the stored pulse counts. A display part (2) indicates the cumulative result of the pulse rates, the consumed calories, etc. during the measuring time intervals. <IMAGE>
