OPTICAL STAR COUPLERS

An optical 1xN star coupler is disclosed which has a single mode input fibre and N single mode output fibres forming an output fibre assembly. The output fibres are tapered within a former which holds each output fibre so that it is positioned substantially identically relative to the remaining output fibres. The input fibre is also tapered such that the fundamental mode field of the input fibre and output fibre assembly are substantially equal. The identical relative positions of the output fibres provides a wavelength independent 1xN star coupler.
