The invention relates to a method for the manufacture of a composite roll for a paper machine or for paper finishing devices. In the method the roll body 11 is made in a winding machine by feeding matrix material 12 and reinforcing fibres 13 to the machine simultaneously and providing the roll body 11 with a hard, wear-resistant coating 14, which prevents penetration. According to the invention the coating 14 is manufactured in conjunction with the winding of the reel body 11 in such a way that the reinforcing fibres 13 in the roll body 11 are replaced in the coating 14 by a filler material 15, which is fed among the matrix material in particulate form.
