PURPOSE:To apply the principle of IRISTER by which information on a recording layer is allowed to appear thermally on a reproducing layer even when a transparent garnet film is used as a magneto-optical recording medium for a high density magneto-optical disk and to enable high density recording and reproduction with light having short wavelength. CONSTITUTION:A reproducing layer 4, a recording layer 5 and a reflecting film 12 are successively formed on a substrate 11 and the layers 4, 5 are magnetically coupled by exchange interaction at the interface. The reproducing layer 4 is a film of Bi substd. garnet represented by BixR3-x MyFe5-yO12 (where O<=x<3, O<=y<2, R is Y or at least one kind of rare earth element and M is an element substitutable for Fe). The recording layer 5 is a film of Bi unsubstd. garnet represented by R3MyFe5-yO12 (where 0<=y<2, R is Y or at least one kind of rare earth element and M is an element substitutable for Fe).
