Asbestos-free, organically bound frictional linings - contg. minor amt. of silicone oil used as disc and drum brake linings

The linings (I) contain 0.5-5% (all pts.wt.) silicone oil (II) on wt. of frictional lining mixt. (III). Prepn. of (I), comprising mixing the dry components with addn. of 0.5-5% (II), shaping (III) as a (I), hardening, opt. mechanically processing (I), and fixing (I) to a support. (II) has viscosity 10-1000, pref. 10-100, sq.m/second (at 25 deg.C). (III) is prepressed cold then hot-pressed whereby (I) is formed and at least partially hardened. (I) is finally hardened in an oven. Surface of hardened, and opt. mechanically treated, (I) is heat-treated. USE/ADVANTAGE - Disc and drum brake linings. Sepn. of fine dust from (III) during transporting, storing, and metering is reduced, avoiding changes in compsn. due to loss of certain components, e.g., binder, filler, as dust; (III) remains uniform during processing, avoiding formation of inhomogeneities which can lead to increased noise on braking; (III) before pressing has lower apparent density, is readily shaped, and fills mould better, reducing occurrence of cracks.
