Benzimidazole derivs. of formula (I) and used as filters giving protection against light, in cosmetic compsns. In (I) R1, R2, R3, R4 = H, or 1-10C alkyl or alkoxy; Ar = Ph, opt. substd. with 1-5 aminoalkyl, alkyl, (cyclo)alkoxy, OH or hydroxyalkyl gps. with 1-10C, and at least 1 of the gps. R1-R4, or of the alkyl or alkoxy substits. on Ar is at least 4C. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) have excellent absorption for UVB and UVA radiation, are soluble in cosmetic oils, are stable to heat and light, and are non-toxic and non-irritant.
