The checking of successive cuts at least approximately polygonal produced in a strip from theoretical successive cuts includes, in a field through which the strip passes as it progresses: image acquisition, conversion of the latter into binary, contour extraction by FREEMAN encoding, then polygonal approximation. The segments of this polygonal approximation are then turned into vectors and the successions of angles between successive segments are compared with the succession of angles of the theoretical cuts of the same identification. Preferably, a discrimination is also made of the polygonal approximations by a network of neurons which have gone through a learning process with polygonal approximations of cuts with and without faults.
