PURPOSE:To attain uniform color and lightness in the driving and non-driving regions of a color compensated ECB type liq. crystal display element and to ensure excellent display quality. CONSTITUTION:In an ECB type liq. crystal display element, the difference between the retardation of a double refraction layer 11 formed between a liq. crystal layer 8 and one polarizer 9 and the retardation of the liq. crystal layer 8 is regulated to <=100nm. The retardation of the double refraction layer 11 in a region corresponding to the non-driving region of the liq. crystal cell is made higher than that of the layer 11 in a region corresponding to the driving region. |
