The safety system is positioned around the truck forks (20) and comprises horizontal bars (14) each side of the load bearing forks and a front gate bar (17). The bars are linked to a sensor which immediately stops the vehicle when an obstruction is contacted. The bars are mounted on a vertical slider (18) and have a cranked arm connection to the slider. Thus the bars can be swung over the load bearing forks, when raised on the slider.
