PURPOSE:An antimicrobial agent, obtained by using lichocalcone A which is one kind of flavonoids present in licorice roots and capable of preventing the deterioration in quality of foods, cosmetics and other various products by contamination of microorganisms. CONSTITUTION:An antimicrobial agent containing lichocalcone A, i.e. methoxy-4,4'-dihydroxy-5-(alpha,alpha'-dimethylallyl)chalcone as an active ingredient. Since the licochalcone A exhibits powerful antimicrobial activity against microorganisms, e.g. Bacillus subtilis of the genus Bacillus, Clostridium sporogenes and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, whether the licochalcone A is synthetic or naturally occurring material, it can be effectively utilized for preventing the deterioration in quality of various products by contamination of such microorganisms. |
