METHOD AND DEVICE OF CASTING ARC-FUSED METAL- LIC MATERIAL IN INGOT

PURPOSE: To provide a method for casting an ingot by plasma arc melting for controlling the solidification of an alloy. CONSTITUTION: A molten metallic material is transported to an ingot mold 28 and the front surface temperature and temperature distribution of the molten metal pool 40 in a casting mold are measured by an imaging radiometer 48. This radiometer is arranged on the outside of an inert gas filled chamber enclosing the ingot mold 28 in such a manner that the ingot pool surface is visible through a peep window 46. An arc is directed toward the ingot pool surface by using at least a plasma arc torch 44 and the intensity thereof is selectively adjusted. Simultaneously the irradiation of the arc is arranged in a selective position to maintain the desirable prescribed mold pool surface temperature and temperature distribution, by which a preselected metallurgical structure is obtained in the solidified ingot.
