PURPOSE: To obtain a membrane having a wide range of molecular separation ability by reacting a crosslinking layer supported on a solvent stable porous membrane substrate with a crosslinked product such as polyphenylene oxide type polymers, polymers derived from haloalkylated polyphenylene oxide type polymers and polyamines to crosslink the layer. CONSTITUTION: A solvent stable composite membrane comprising a crosslinked layer having a thickness of less than 5μsupported on a solvent stable porous membrane substrate. The crosslinked layer comprises an at least one polymer selected from polyphenylene oxide type polymers and polysulfone type polymers and an at least one polymer derived from haloalkylated polyphenylene oxide type monomers. Further, it is crosslinked by the reaction with an at least one crosslinked product selected from the group consisting of ammonia, aliphat., alicyclic compounds., monoamines and polyamines of arom. ring-contg. aliphat. and arom. amines, hydroxylamine and substd. hydroxylamine, as well as hydrazine and substd. hydrazine.
