METHOD AND DEVICE FOR REMOVING OPTICAL FIBER COATING

PURPOSE:To prevent failure of fusion splicing by bringing an ignition source into contact with a part in the longitudinal direction of an optical fiber in an oxygen atmosphere and burning away the coating material. CONSTITUTION:Removal of the coating of the optical fiber is first executed by holding the optical fiber 5 by holders 4 in a chamber 1 and introducing oxygen from an oxygen supplying part 2 continuously into the chamber 1 to maintain the oxygen atmosphere therein. A flame is then ignited to a miniature torch of the ignition source 6 and is brought into contact with the central part of the optical fiber 5. The coating material is thereby locally heated to the ignition temp. or above and is ignited. The coating material burns successively toward the holders 4 on both end sides and only the exposed optical fiber 7 remains in the chamber 1. The flame of the miniature torch is extinguished at the point of the time when the covering material begins to burn.
