The sailboat (10) is of the proa type. It comprises shells (11/12) which are substantially symmetrical with respect to a transverse central axis of the boat and a mast (13) which can be pivotably moved between several attitudes inclined forwards with respect to the respective ends of the boat. The sail (24) has the shape of an isosceles triangle which is downwind with respect to the mast (13), so that each opposite edge of the sail can be tensioned selectively between the foward-inclined mast (13) and the front end of the boat (10). The mast (13) extends upwards from the downwind side of the main shell (12) and is inclined towards the downwind side to promote righting of the boat in the event of swaying.
