The invention proposes a device for braking a pinion (16) mounted freely on a shaft (20) of a gear box including several runners rotationally secured to the pinion (16) with respect to which they can move radially and which are urged elastically radially to interact by friction with a cylindrical bearing surface (38) of the shaft (20) when the rotational speed of the pinion (16) is less than a given threshold value, characterised in that each runner (24A, 24B, 24C) is a section of a friction ring (22) broken down into several parts, the internal cylindrical wall (36) of which interacts with the said bearing surface (38) of the shaft (20) and the outer cylindrical wall (42) of which includes a groove (44) in which there is received an annular spring (47) for radially clamping the pads, and in that each runner includes a guide finger (46) received in a radial groove (50) of the pinion (16). <IMAGE>
