<p>PURPOSE:To rapidly increase the temperature of a catalyst to an activation temperature during the starting of an engine regardless of whether the catalyst is new or deteriorated. CONSTITUTION:A catalyst 7 with a heater and a main catalyst 8 are arranged in a catalyst converter 3 and the catalyst 7 is rapidly heated by means of a heater during the starting of an engine. When the catalyst 7 is deteriorated, the activation temperature of the catalyst 7 is increased with the deterioration thereof. Thus, an energizing time of the heater is lengthened with deterioration of the catalyst 7, and when energization of the heater is completed, the temperature of the catalyst 7 is increased to an activation temperature regardless of whether the catalyst is new or deteriorated.</p> |
