A lift (8) operates in a lift shaft (1) and is counterbalanced by a weight (9) which is attached to the lift by a cable (7) which passes around guide pulleys (6). An electric motor is mounted on the roof of the lift (8) and drives friction rollers which are pressed against vertical guide rails installed on opposite sides of the lift shaft. The lift is provided with a safety device consisting of a speed regulator, which, when the safe speed of the lift is exceeded, operates a brake on the motor shaft. The safety of the lift operation is further increased by a brake which is fitted to one of the cable guide pulleys (6).
