The arrangement contains a flexible scale carrying tape (3) joined at its ends, with scale markings, guided over deflection elements (7,8) and tensioned. The tape is connected to one machine element via a drive dog. A sensing unit connected to a fixed machine unit senses the scale markings and is electrically connected to an evaluation unit. The deflection elements are rotatably mounted on a base part (11) connected to the fixed machine part and apply the tensioning forces. The base part is mounted in a protective housing (17), fixed at one point and movably wrt. another in the longitudinal scale direction. USE/ADVANTAGE - For measuring and setting lengths between machine parts, eg in work-tool machines, coordinate measuring machines etc.. The simple, compact, well sealed arrangement can be mounted on a machine without recalibration.
